Linocut Print - THE MAGPIE KING

$295.00

This is an original handmade linocut print. Limited edition of 30 prints.

This print was a finalist in the 2023 Hornsby Art Prize.

This work depicts the Australian Magpie in all his glory. I have always loved the Australian Magpie as they are so uniquely Australian. Their warble is one of the most beautiful and recognisable sounds of our native soundscape. This magpie is the king of his domain, adorned with a crown of Cooktown Orchid flowers.

This print has been exhibited in the Warringah Printmakers Studio Annual Exhibition 2022 and at the Bathers' Pavillion Gallery Group Exhibition "Printmaking".

Linocut printing is a form of printmaking referred to as relief printing.
My process in creating a print starts with an illustration. I then transfer the illustration to the lino block.
The image is carved into the block using specialty carving tools.
The carving process is a detailed and time consuming process, and requires a high level of attention and patience.
The blocks are then inked with archival quality ink and printed on acid free archival quality printmaking paper.
After I have printed the linocut and allowed the ink to dry, I then add colour by hand.

Each sheet is hand torn to the required size. Your print will have two deckled edges and two hand torn edges.

Due to the nature of the handmade process, each print is unique and will have slight variations.

Paper Size: 39cm x 38cm

Image Size: 30cm x 30cm

Ink: Sakura Printmaking Ink

Watercolour: Winsor & Newton Professional Watercolours

Paper: Somerset Velvet Printmaking Paper 250gsm

Each print is signed, titled, and numbered in pencil on the front, directly below the printed image.

All prints are unframed. Packaging: Your print will rolled and mailed in a mailing tube.

Behind the Price Tag: Each of my hand-pulled prints is an original artwork - etched, carved, and printed by hand using traditional printmaking methods. There’s no digital reproduction here, just time, skill, and many quiet hours in the studio. These works are printed in small editions, signed, and made to last. My pricing reflects the labour, materials, and care involved - as well as my goal to make a sustainable living from my creative work. It’s easy to spend without hesitation on mass-produced items. This is something different: slow, personal, and created with intention.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Orders are typically packed and dispatched within a few business days. As a one-person studio, I handle everything myself alongside family life, so occasional delays can happen. I always aim to get your order out as soon as possible and appreciate your patience.

  • No, all prints are sold unframed. Any framed images shown are for display purposes only, to give an idea of how the work might look once framed.

  • I offer both hand-pulled original prints (such as linocuts and collagraph prints) and high-quality giclée prints. Each product listing clearly states which type of print it is.

  • Prints up to A3 size are carefully packaged flat with a rigid backing board inside a protective envelope. Larger prints are rolled and shipped in a sturdy tube to ensure they arrive safely.

  • Some of my hand-pulled prints are released in limited editions, while others may be open or uneditioned. Details are included in each product listing.
