This is an original hand-pulled TetraPak drypoint print. Limited to a small edition of two prints. This listing is for an unframed print. Watch me print this in the video below.
This print is a quiet study of a magpie. The image was created using drypoint mark-making, where fine lines are scratched directly into the plate. Colour was added using chine-collé, a printmaking technique where thin coloured paper is bonded to the print during the printing process, becoming part of the final artwork.
TetraPak, the material used in long-life milk and juice cartons, can be transformed into a surprisingly beautiful printmaking plate. In printmaking, this is a type of collagraph, where texture and marks on the surface of a plate hold ink and create depth in the final print. I use the inside of recycled TetraPaks, manipulating the surface through tearing, sanding, drypoint and other processes to create the desired texture. Ink is applied to the plate, and the image is then pressed onto paper using a printing press. The mark-making process is detailed and time-consuming, requiring a high level of attention, patience and care.
Each sheet of paper is hand torn to the required size. This edition consists of two prints, each printed on a different sized sheet of paper.
No two magpies are the same. Each print has its own variation, with its own little mood.
Paper Size:
Edition 1/2: 21cm (W) x 23cm (H)
Edition 2/2: 17.5cm (W) x 17.5cm (H)
All prints are unframed. Your print will be packaged within a plastic sleeve with backing board. The print will be shipped in a rigid mailer.
Behind the Price Tag: Each of my hand-pulled prints is an original artwork - etched, carved, and printed by hand using traditional printmaking methods. There’s no digital reproduction here, just time, skill, and many quiet hours in the studio. These works are printed in small editions, signed, and made to last. My pricing reflects the labour, materials, and care involved - as well as my goal to make a sustainable living from my creative work. It’s easy to spend without hesitation on mass-produced items. This is something different: slow, personal, and created with intention.
